AGI

Also called artificial general intelligence

Artificial general intelligence: AI that could match or beat people across most kinds of work. A stated goal of several labs, with no agreed definition.

Today's AI is uneven. The same model can write working code, explain a legal clause and pass hard exams, then fail at a task a teenager finds easy, like keeping track of a long, multi-step errand. AGI names the point where that unevenness is gone: a system as capable as people across most kinds of work, not just some.

Several labs say building it is their goal, and they don't agree on what it is. OpenAI's charter defines it as "highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work". Google DeepMind researchers proposed levels instead of a single finish line. So "AGI is here" is a claim about a definition as much as about a model.

For example

A model that wins a maths olympiad medal but can't reliably book a dentist appointment online shows why "general" is the hard part.
