Answer engine
Also called AI search engine
A search tool that reads web pages for you and writes one answer with citations, instead of giving you a list of links.
A search engine finds pages and leaves the reading to you. An answer engine does the reading too. It runs searches, picks a handful of pages, pulls out what seems relevant and writes a summary, with little numbers that link to where each claim came from.
That saves time, especially for questions that would mean comparing several sites. It also moves a lot of judgement to the machine: which sources count, what to leave out, how to resolve 2 pages that disagree. You see the conclusion, not the argument.
It has changed the web too. Fewer people click through to the sites that wrote the information, and publishers have taken answer engines to court over it. The habit that keeps you safe is the same as ever: follow the link before you rely on the claim.
For example
Asking "is it worth replacing my 2016 laptop battery or the whole laptop?" returns a short answer with 5 numbered sources.
