Custom GPT
Also called GPTs, Gems
A saved, named version of ChatGPT with its own instructions and files. Custom GPTs are being retired in favour of plugins.
From late 2023, ChatGPT let anyone build a GPT: give it a name, write instructions, upload reference files and, optionally, connect it to an outside service. Within 2 months OpenAI counted over 3 million, from homework helpers to brand-voice writers, and many were shared in the GPT Store. Google's version was called Gems.
Both are being wound down. The idea moved on to something more flexible: instructions you can switch on inside any chat, combine with others and carry between tools. OpenAI calls the new packages plugins, and the instruction part of them skills; Google calls its replacement Skills.
If you rely on a GPT or a Gem, move it before the deadline and test it afterwards, since anything that depended on an outside connection may need setting up again.
For example
A "Recipe scaler" GPT that always converts to grams and asks how many people you're cooking for.
