Edge device

Also called internet-facing device, network edge device, perimeter device

Equipment that sits between an organisation's network and the internet, such as a firewall, VPN gateway or router, and can be reached from outside.

Every organisation has a few machines whose job is to face the internet: the firewall, the VPN or remote-access gateway, routers, mail gateways. They are called edge devices because they sit at the edge of the network, between inside and outside.

That position makes them valuable to an attacker twice over. They can be reached from anywhere, so a flaw in one can be used without first getting inside. And they are trusted by everything behind them, so breaking one often opens the network.

They are also easy to miss when patching: a standby unit or a second site can sit outside the routine that updates laptops and servers. With AI doing the scanning, a forgotten one is found by the same sweep as everyone else's.

For example

The VPN gateway staff use to work from home: anyone on the internet can reach its login page, including an attacker's scanner.
