Large language model

Also called LLM

The kind of AI model behind chatbots: trained on vast amounts of text to predict what comes next in a sentence.

A large language model, or LLM, is trained by reading an enormous amount of text and learning, over and over, to predict the next piece of a sentence. Do that across books, websites and code, at huge scale, and the model picks up grammar, facts, styles of argument and how code fits together.

After that first training, companies train it further to follow instructions and act as a helpful assistant. What you chat with is the result. "Large" refers to the size of the model (billions of internal numbers called parameters) and of the text it learned from. "Language" is a little out of date, since most current models also read images and audio.

For example

GPT, Gemini, Claude, Llama, DeepSeek, Qwen and Kimi are all families of large language models.
