Romance scam

Also called romance scams, romance fraud, dating scam

A con where someone builds an online relationship with you, often over months, and then asks for money or "investment".

Romance scams run on patience. The scammer finds you on a dating app, social media or even a wrong-number text, and becomes the most attentive person in your life: good morning messages, remembered details, plans for the future. Only once you trust them does money come up, as an emergency, a travel cost, or an "opportunity" to invest together.

AI makes every part of this easier. Profile photos can be generated so they appear nowhere else online, messages can be written fluently in any language, and some groups swap their faces on live video so the person you see matches the photos.

The signs sit in the pattern, not the person: they can never quite meet, the story keeps needing money, and they want it kept secret.

For example

A kind, attentive match from a dating app can't ever meet in person, then needs help paying a medical bill abroad.
