Slash command

Also called custom slash command, custom command

A shortcut typed with a leading slash, such as /deploy, that runs a saved prompt or a built-in action in a coding agent.

Typing the same long instruction each time, such as your team's steps for fixing a bug, is slow, and it drifts from person to person. A slash command saves it under a name. Type /fix-issue and Claude Code runs the saved prompt, with anything you type after the name passed in as arguments.

Where the file lives decides who has the command: committed in the project, every teammate gets it on their next pull; in your home folder, only you do. In Claude Code, commands have become part of skills, which can also carry supporting files and load on their own when they're relevant.

For example

A team commits .claude/commands/fix-issue.md with its bug-fixing steps, so every developer who pulls the repo can type /fix-issue 4182 in Claude Code.
