Synthetic identity

Also called synthetic identity fraud, fake identity

A made-up person built from real and invented details, now often with AI-generated photos and documents, used to open accounts or get credit.

Ordinary identity theft borrows a real person. Synthetic identity fraud invents one, usually stitching a genuine stolen detail (an ID number, an address) to a fake name and birthday. The "person" builds a credit history, opens accounts and borrows, then disappears.

AI fills in the parts that used to be hard. Generative tools can produce a convincing face that belongs to nobody, edit identity documents and even speak or appear on video. FinCEN warned US banks that criminals were using these tools to get through online identity checks and open accounts to move money.

It reaches beyond banking. Anthropic reported North Korean operatives using its model to build false professional identities, pass technical interviews and keep remote jobs at tech companies.

For example

A real stolen ID number, a made-up name and an AI-generated driving licence photo are used to open a bank account that moves scam money.
