Voice clone
Also called voice cloning, cloned voice
An AI copy of a real person's voice, made from a short recording, that can say anything typed into it.
Voice-cloning tools learn the sound of a voice from a sample, then speak any text in it. A research system did this from 3 seconds of audio back in 2023, and today a short clip from a social media video can be enough for a convincing copy.
Scammers use clones for urgent calls: a grandchild in trouble, a boss who needs a payment made now, a bank's "security team". The voice is the convincing part, so the check has to be something a clone can't fake. Hang up and call back on a number you already have, ask a question only the real person could answer, or use a family code word agreed in advance.
For example
A parent gets a call in their son's voice saying he's been arrested and needs bail money today; they ring his own number, and he answers from work.
