eDiscovery
Also called e-discovery, electronic discovery
Finding, preserving and handing over electronic records for a legal case, an audit or an investigation, and the tools used to do it.
eDiscovery is the work of finding the electronic records a legal case, audit or investigation asks for, keeping them from being deleted, and producing them in a form that can be handed over.
It used to mean mail and documents. What staff type into an AI assistant, and what it answers, is now part of the same pile, and the big office suites have added AI chats to their eDiscovery tools.
For a security team the practical questions are which AI tools those searches reach and who is allowed to run them.
For example
A regulator asks for every record about one customer complaint. The records team searches mail, documents and AI assistant chats for that customer's name and exports what it finds.
