Chat history
Also called past chats, conversation history
The record of your past conversations that an AI app keeps, so you can find, continue or delete them.
Your chat history is more than a list of old conversations. It's a diary of what you've worried about, worked on and asked about, sometimes over years, kept on a company's servers.
It's handy. You can pick up a long piece of work where you left off, or find an answer you half remember. In most apps it now also feeds the AI's memory, so old chats quietly shape new answers.
Every few months, it's worth a look. Delete what you wouldn't want someone else to read, use a temporary chat for one-off sensitive questions, and check whether past chats are being used to personalise answers or to train future models. Those are separate switches.
For example
You search your history for "boiler" to find the chat where the AI explained your boiler's error code last winter.
Put it to use
Where you'll meet chat history in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, how to use it there, and the mix-up most people make.
