Fake AI app
Also called fake AI tool, fake AI website
A website, app or download dressed up as a popular AI tool, built to steal your logins, money or data.
Every popular technology attracts fakes, and AI tools are the most popular new software in years. Criminals ride the interest with lookalike sites, apps and browser extensions that promise free access to a paid model or a feature that sounds too good, like unlimited video generation.
In one campaign tracked by Google's Mandiant team, more than 30 fake sites copied well-known AI video tools. Ads for them on Facebook and LinkedIn reached over 2.3 million people in the EU alone. The sites looked like they worked, then delivered malware that stole passwords, browser sessions and card details.
Fake AI browser extensions are the same idea, and they can read every page you visit. Install AI tools only from the company that makes them.
For example
An ad offers a free "AI video generator"; whatever you type, it hands you a "video" file that is really malware.
