Password manager

Also called password managers

An app that creates, stores and fills a different strong password for every site, and won't fill them on a fake one.

Nobody can remember a different strong password for 100 sites, so people reuse a few, and one breach opens many doors. A password manager removes the memory problem: it makes long random passwords, keeps them encrypted behind one strong password or your face or fingerprint, and fills them in for you.

It has a second job that matters more now. A manager remembers the exact site each password belongs to, so on a lookalike page it stays silent. AI has made fake pages and the messages that lead to them harder to spot by eye; 1Password said as much when it added a warning for people who paste a password into a page it doesn't recognise.

Protect the manager itself with the strongest sign-in it offers, ideally a passkey.

For example

You click a link to "your bank", and your password manager offers nothing to fill, because the address isn't your bank's.
