Sensitivity label
Also called classification label, confidentiality label, data classification label
A tag such as "Confidential" on a file, email or site that carries protection settings with it, such as encryption or sharing limits.
A sensitivity label is a tag that says how carefully a piece of content must be handled, and makes software act on it. Mark a document "Confidential" and the label can encrypt it, stamp it, or limit what people may do with it. The protection is attached to the item, so it applies wherever the item is used.
Labels also go on places. A label on a site can fix whether that site is private or public and how its contents may be shared.
That makes labels a way of setting defaults. Where a label is required at the moment a site is created, every new site starts with a decision about who it is for. The same labels give an admin a handle for AI: files under a chosen label can be kept out of what an assistant works with.
For example
A finance team's new site is created with the "Confidential" label. The label sets the site to private and locks that setting, so nobody can make it public by accident.
