AI model
The trained system inside an AI app that does the actual work: a large file of learned numbers that turns your input into an output.
An AI model is what training produces: a large file of learned numbers that turns an input (your question, a photo) into an output (an answer, a caption). ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are apps; inside each sit one or more models with names that change every few months.
The app wraps the model in everything else you experience: your chat history, memory, web search, uploaded files, safety filters and the company's own instructions. That's why "which model?" is the first question when an answer goes wrong, and why a smaller, faster model in the same app can give a noticeably weaker reply.
For example
"ChatGPT said it" doesn't tell you much. "ChatGPT's Instant model said it with search off" tells you why the answer missed last week's news.
