AI in group chats
Also called group chat with AI, @Meta AI
An AI assistant you can bring into a chat with other people, where it answers questions for everyone to see.
Most AI chats are one person and a bot. In a group, the AI becomes a shared helper: settling an argument about a film, splitting a bill, finding a restaurant that suits everyone's diet, or drafting the invitation.
How much it sees depends on how it was brought in. Ask it a question by name and it gets that one message. Add it to the group and it can read the conversation from then on, which changes the group's privacy for everyone, not just the person who added it. What it reads goes to the AI company, under that company's rules.
The idea hasn't settled. OpenAI tried group chats in ChatGPT and wound them down within a year, while Meta keeps its AI a tap away inside WhatsApp. Wherever you meet it, the same courtesy applies: ask before you bring it in.
For example
Planning a weekend away, someone types "@Meta AI find a cabin for six near the lakes" and the whole group sees the suggestions.
